  • $110,000 - $135,000

About the Position

 

PFLAG National is seeking a seasoned expert in high-level coalition building, advocacy, organizational strategy, and on-the-ground experience leading 501c3 campaigns in states and local efforts to lead the newly created Department of Advocacy. This essential position is charged with creating and implementing strategies to deepen working relationships with high-level partners inside and outside the LGBTQ+ movement.

 

Reporting to the Executive Vice President, this person will be a dynamic manager, organizer, and communicator with a hunger to elevate the work of PFLAG at national, regional, and state levels.  The PFLAG National Team will look to this individual to coordinate national, state and local 501c3 issue and education campaigns mobilizing the volunteer PFLAG chapter network and national members to further PFLAG’s policy goals and priorities.  This role will also be responsible for building impactful alliances that further PFLAG’s mission.

Everyday, PFLAG has worked to fight for an equitable and inclusive world where LGBTQ+ people are safe, celebrated, empowered and loved. PFLAG National has over 350,000 members and supporters and nearly 400 chapters in the United States. This vast grassroots network is cultivated, resourced, and serviced by the PFLAG National staff, Board of Directors, and Regional Directors Council. Currently, PFLAG National has a staff capacity of 30 FTEs who reside in Washington DC and ten states; over half of these work remotely from its headquarters. PFLAG National has a labor agreement—and favorable relationship—with its non-Director employees. 

Duties Include

 

The Director will have duties and responsibilities crossing many functions.  Below is an outline of those duties 

 

  • Develop a roadmap of strategic alliances with national and regional organizations that have on-the-ground reach to support our advocacy work

  • Working in consultation with the Policy & Government Affairs, Communications,  Chapter Engagement, Learning & Inclusion teams, direct 501c3 campaigns at the state and local level to drive engagement that affects policy

  • Lead and implement direct outreach initiatives to a broad and diverse set of constituents including multicultural, civil rights organizations, and needed collaborators

  • Mobilize volunteer PFLAG chapter leaders and members, Regional Directors, and grassroots members and supporters of PFLAG National’s mission and priorities

  • Coordinate and facilitate coalition meetings and communicate effectively with members to promote collaboration, negotiation, and problem-solving

  • With collaborators, strategically mobilize advocates to promote and push for PFLAG National’s policy objectives for full protections and equity nationwide

  • Oversee and build the department and supervise the work of two or more staff members, as well as consultants and vendors

  • Advise the Executive Vice President and other leadership on strategies and progress toward set goals

  • Other duties as assigned  

Skills & Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

  • Seven years of progressively responsible organizing, political, and management experience in campaigns, grassroots organizing and advocacy, or a nonprofit setting

  • Solid knowledge of the LGBTQ+ political and organizational landscape and experience navigating it

  • Knowledge of and experience with chapter-based, membership organizations and working with both volunteers and grassroots supporters, and/or extensive volunteer networks

  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, organizational, and management skills.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Three or more years experience directly supervising staff

  • Experience in managing consultants, external advisors, and vendors

  • Fluency in Spanish or other languages is a plus

  • Enthusiastic support of PFLAG’s strategic vision, mission, and goals

  • Knowledge of CRMs like Salesforce is helpful
